Supergirl Soars to the Top

Supergirl-CBS-poster-excerptThe shows premiering at the beginning of the season have officially all aired.  The past month has been full of a mix of ratings, both amazingly high and some amazingly low. But after the final premiere of the season last Monday night, the numbers have been released and there is a clear ratings winner.

Supergirl, the new show from superhero producer Greg Berlanti came out of the gate strong, with the biggest numbers of any premiere this fall.

Berlanti has produced hit superhero shows such as The Flash and Arrow, both on The CW.  This is the first of the franchise to come over to a major network.

The buzz surrounding the premiere of Supergirl has been incredible, starting as early as last year.  They even managed to get those ratings despite the episode leaking right after Comic Con months before the official premiere.  Fans of the other DC Comics shows and new audiences are just that excited to see a superhero show with a strong female leading the cast.

Melissa Benoist, who some may know from her character Marley on the hit show Glee, is playing the lead, Kara, the cousin of famous hero Superman.  The show focuses on her journey to become a superhero and protect her city, with the help of a great group of friends.

The cast already has great chemistry and that will only get better as the show continues.  As an added  bonus for those Broadway fans out there, the cast also includes Jeremy Jordan and Laura Benanti who have both been nominated for Tony Awards. Fingers crossed we get a musical episode somewhere down the road.

With a couple of shows maintaining their strong ratings going into the second week and beyond, it will be interesting to see where Supergirl ends up tonight. Will it stay on top, or will it fall victim to the second week drop? Time will tell, all I know is that I will definitely be tuning in to see what extraterrestrial villain Benoist will be fighting tonight.

Grey’s Anatomy Turns 250

This is your friendly spoiler alert. A discussion about last night’s episode cannot be without spoilers from the end of season eleven.

GREY'S ANATOMY - "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" - In the midst of the sisters' dinner party, Maggie ditches her cooking duties to rush to the hospital. Meanwhile, April steps in to help cook as an attempt to avoid Jackson, and Arizona nervously waits to find out more about Callie's new girlfriend, on "Grey's Anatomy," THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. Last night’s Grey’s Anatomy episode marked a huge milestone for the flagship Shondaland show with the dinner party from hell.  The first show of the successful studio hit its 250th episode, and it will definitely go into the Grey’s record books.

The show started back in 2005 and quickly rose to the top of primetime dramas.  Currently on its twelfth season, Grey’s is known for intense drama, emotional relationships, and crazy medical stories. To this day, although the show has lost some beloved characters and, with them, some fans along the way, it continues to be one of the most popular shows on Thursday nights and last night’s episode brought us back to the intensity and heart that we had at the beginning.

So let’s dive right into this.

The 250th episode was chalk full of some of the most intense drama we have ever seen on this show.  I am one of those people who has seen every single episode more than once, and chances are, way more than that.

Now, this was a huge episode, which means I am only touching on the highlights, because I could not possibly address absolutely everything that happened.

First off, we saw Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) have one of her biggest and most well deserved breakdowns of the show’s 250 episodes.  When Meredith saw the woman, Penny (Samantha Sloyan), who was in charge of her husband’s (Patrick Dempsey) medical care the night that he died walk into her house for a dinner party she lost it, and rightfully so.

The only one who could really help her and understand what she needed was her only remaining original intern friend, Alex Karev (Justin Chambers).  This has easily become my favorite relationship on this show, and this episode highlighted the fact that he really has become her new “person” in Cristina’s absence and that nothing can break the bond that the originals share.

Mer wasn’t the only one to have a breakdown last night.  Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) absolutely lost it when she found out that the woman sitting next to her at the dinner table was the woman responsible for her brother’s death. She exploded at Penny, at Meredith (which, as you can imagine, Mer did not take too well) and Owen who, thank God, finally gave her the piping hot cup of truth tea that she has needed, in my opinion, since Derek’s death last season.

Icing on the cake: Penny is coming to work at Grey Sloan Memorial! Wow, this is just great, Grey’s Anatomy has its very own Joffrey (any Game of Thrones fans out there?)now.

So all in all, 250 episodes is a huge landmark that shows rarely get the chance to hit, so when they do, it should be a big one, and Grey’s absolutely delivered. It’s going to be incredibly interesting to see how this all plays out throughout the rest of this season, which has been arguably one of the best in a while, and it’s only episode five.

Shonda, keep up the good work my friend.

Where You Lead, We Will Follow

UnknownBreaking News: Netflix has officially signed a deal with Warner Brothers to revive Gilmore Girls for a limited series.

TVLine broke the news earlier today saying that Amy Sherman-Palladino will be writing the episodes along with executive producer Daniel Palladino. In other words, the original team is back together, this is not a drill, it is actually happening.

Negotiations with the cast members are just beginning, but it is rumored that the core three Gilmore Girls, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel and Kelly Bishop will be starring.

The beloved show ended back in 2007 leaving its dedicated fans wanting more. That fan base grew when the entire series was released on Netflix last October. People were finally able to binge watch the series about their favorite mother-daughter duo and the eccentric people who surrounded them.

Even more buzz was sparked when the cast reunited at the ATX Festival earlier this year. Almost everyone was in attendance, the Gilmore Girls, all of the ex-boyfriends, Hep Alien members and some fan-favorite Stars Hollow residents.  They discussed the possibility of doing a revival of some kind, however at that point, nothing was in the works. Missing at that panel was co-star Melissa McCarthy, leaving everyone wondering whether one of the show’s breakout stars will be involved in the revival.

gilmore-edward-herrmann2There is one sad part to this mostly exciting news. The revival will be missing a crucial character, the family patriarch Edward Herrmann. The beloved actor passed away back in December, which means the series will continue without everyone’s favorite couple, and fans will probably see a new side of Emily as she navigates life without her partner in crime.

Fans, both old and new are excited to see what the revival will have to offer.  We will finally get the chance to find out where our favorite characters, the ones who became like family to us, and in my case, the ones we grew up with, ended up. There is really only one thing left to say: Oy with the poodles already!

HGTV’s New Home

hgtv-netflix

For those who enjoy an afternoon on the couch watching episode after episode of House Hunters, whether it be the original, International, Renovation, Where are they Now? or any of the others, you may have noticed the latest trend on everyone’s favorite procrastinating tool.

That’s right, HGTV has made its way to Netflix.

Netflix has been broadening its horizons lately.  They even have a schedule that people can see now, as opposed to just going to finish your binge watching only to find that the show was taken off.

Last year, House Hunters was the first HGTV show to pop up on Netflix. Since then other shows like Property Brothers, Buying and Selling, and more have joined the ranks.

Things got even better on October 1st. One of the newer HGTV shows was added. That’s right HGTV nerds, you can now watch Chip and Joanna Gaines be adorable and do amazing renovations any time you want on Fixer Upper.

Now, I may be more excited than most, but have you seen the renovations that they’ve done? I mean look at these.

(I may get too excited about shiplap and “old meets new” design).

Regardless whether Fixer Upper or House Hunters is your favorite HGTV show, the point is that you can now binge watch all of your favorite renovations and life or death realty decisions. And as an added bonus, you can also convert non-HGTV watchers, because it is just that convenient now!

Thank you Netflix for finally recognizing that what everyone really wants is more HGTV.  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear the Property Brothers calling my name.
